Resources
Tourism is the third largest employer in the National Capital region with over 6000 people working in OGHA member hotels and approximately 80% are full time. The hotel community generates over $500 million dollars of revenue annually. This is new money to the region and has a positive impact on our local economy.
OGHA member hotels make significant investments in marketing our region to the outside world. Annually, member hotels spend in excess of $33 million dollars promoting our region as a place to visit and enjoy. This helps to supplement the sales and marketing programs Ottawa Tourism creates using the funds generated from the voluntary 3% Destination Marketing Fee Program. Beginning in 2018 this program was replaced a 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) in Ontario. In Quebec there is a Provincial Hotel Tax of 3.5% charged on room rates.
OGHA member hotels in Ottawa pay some $26 million dollars in property taxes, or $2,941 per hotel room. Our members in Gatineau pay some $2 million in property taxes annually or approximately $1,351 per guest room.
